Label TextCharles Eastlake wanted to produce furniture that was solid and easy to make with machinery. Eastlake style was found in Victorian Style homes, one important influence of Eastlake’s designs was the Aesthetic Movement of the 1890’s, this movement was heavily influenced by Japanese designs. Eastlake emphasized the beauty of woodgrain in his designs, he favored oak and cherry wood as well as rosewood and walnut as long as it wasn’t covered with dark varnish. His designs were very rectilinear and had geometric ornament, brackets, trestles and much linear decoration, they also tended to feature simple curves. Eastlake was against using stains and varnishes to cover cheap wood, he instead preferred oiled, naturally colored finishes. Popular features in Eastlakes designs included floral etching, rectangular forms and inlay.
