Label TextA whale oil burner consists of one or two tubes made of tin and set in a base of brass, tin or pewter. The tubes would connect to the wick within the font. Adjustments to the wick are generally made though round or slotted holes in the wick tube with a pickwick, small tool used to manipulate or adjust the wick in whale oil and burning fluid lamps. Commonly, as seen in this example, a metal pin held in a decorative handle of turned or carved wood.
