Label TextThe portrait, Do You Know What's Inside This Flower? George Washington Carver Mentors a Young Henry A. Wallace, features noted Iowa State alumni, famed botanist, and inventor George Washington Carver (c. 1860-1943) fostering what would be a life-long interest in agriculture for Henry A. Wallace (1888-1965). As a boy, Wallace accompanied Carver on nature walks, identifying the botanical structures of wild flowers and prairie grasses. Carver left Ames for the Tuskegee Institute when Wallace was eight, but his influence on Wallace was deep and lasting. Wallace went on to attend Iowa State College (now University) graduating in 1910 with a bachelor’s in animal husbandry. In 1926, Wallace founded the prosperous Hi-Bred Corn Company which would later become the internationally successful Pioneer Hi-Bred.
