Label TextThe J. B. Owens Pottery Produced Art Ceramics In Zanesville, Ohio from 1896 through 1907. Producing over 48 distinct lines in its eleven-year run, Owens Pottery was considered one of the "Big Three of Zanesville". Famous designers and decorators employed include Frank Ferrell, W.A. Long, John Lessell, and Charles Chilcote. Owens’ most popular art pottery lines include the decorated animal and floral high-gloss Utopian line alongside the Lotus, which contained similar decorations but with a matte finish. In 1900, Owens released the Art Nouveau Henri Deux line where designs were incised in the wet clay. In 1905, Owens formally introduced their matt green line, although they had been producing several varieties of similar pottery for years under several other line names. The pottery won awards and was often compared to the work of rivals like Rookwood Pottery, Roseville Pottery, and Weller Pottery, all of which were also based in Ohio. It is believed that Owens ceased art pottery production in 1907 when it began to focus on tile production. The tiles around the Farm House’s living room fireplace are by Owens from sometime around 1910.
