Label TextFrom the University Museums Collections Handbook, vol. 2, 2025: The J. B. Owens Pottery produced art pottery in Zanesville, Ohio from 1896 through 1907. Producing over forty- eight distinct lines in its eleven-year run, Owens Pottery was considered one of the “Big Three of Zanesville.” Famous designers and decorators employed at Owens include Frank Ferrell, W.A. Long, John Lessell, and Charles Chilcote. Owens’ most popular art pottery lines include the decorated animal and floral high-gloss Utopian line alongside the Lotus, which contained similar decorations but with a matte finish. In 1900, Owens released the Art Nouveau Henri Deux line with designs incised in the wet clay. Although the firm previously produced several varieties of similar pottery under other line names, in 1905 they introduced this matte green line. Owens Pottery won awards and tastemakers and collectors often compared Owens to the work of rivals like Rookwood Pottery, Roseville Pottery, and Weller Pottery, all of which were also based in Ohio. It is believed that Owens ceased art pottery production in 1907 when it began to focus on tile production. Owens Pottery produced the mottled tiles around Farm House’s parlor fireplace around 1910.
