Label TextThe creations of Jennifer Steinkamp blur the boundaries between technology and traditional artistic mediums. The use and examination of nature is a theme more often associated with painting, but yet each of her flowers, fruit, or trees are 3-D animations made with a computer, which is then programmed to project the image into space. Through these installations Steinkamp transforms the walls and architecture of structures into living, breathing, moving works of art. The botanical imagery she constructs often depicts the transience of time, as seen with the tree in Judy Crook 13 on exhibition. As the tree sways, time passes, and the leaves change, fall, and grow anew, as they would in nature, but here recreated and sped up through technology. The installations are not merely beautiful and mesmerizing, but often are exploring themes of deeper historical and contemporary issues, such as addiction, human displacement, and femininity. The renovation of the Brunnier Art Museum created a new entrance gallery, a space that begs for recreation with each new installation. Steinkamps’s projections are the perfect introduction of this new space to the Iowa State University community, walls aglow with the intersection of art and technology. In celebration of the reopening, University Museums acquired Judy Crook 13, a work of art that expands the Art on Campus collection into digital media. University Museums constantly seeks to unite art with the science and technology that is the emphasis of Iowa State. The addition of Steinkamp’s work of art will further engage the students and faculty of the university to explore and discuss the creative connections between art and technology, while also providing visual delight to all visitors. The acquisition is made possible by the newly established Joyce Tomlinson Brewer Fund for Art Acquisition, a fund that will continue to provide University Museums the opportunity to expand the permanent and Art on Campus Collections in new and exciting ways through various artistic mediums. -Adrienne Gennett, Associate Curator, 2019
