Label TextFrom the University Museums Collections Handbook, vol. 2, 2025:
Louis Comfort Tiffany first produced lamps commercially around 1898, although he displayed prototypes as early as the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago. Tiffany originally established the Tiffany Glass Company in 1885, which later became the Tiffany Glass and Decorating Company in 1892, and finally renamed Tiffany Studios in 1900. At its peak, the world-renowned studio employed more than 300 workers, including designers, artists, glass blowers, and many other skilled artisans.
Already established in the creation of stained glass windows, lamps with stained glass shades were a natural evolution for the studio. Although the permanent collection has several Tiffany lamps, this floor lamp example features a unique shade of bronze with green glass cabochons that illuminate when lit. The harp base, with slender stem and three legs terminating in lily pad feet, has a pivoting socket head at the top to tip the shade or create a torchiere style lamp. Both the shade and base are stamped Tiffany Studios.
