Label TextFrom the University Museums Collections Handbook, vol. 2, 2025:
Christian Petersen is best known as a sculptor, but his early career in metalwork is less widely recognized. During the first twenty years of his career, Petersen worked as a freelance die-cutter, crafting medallions, plaquettes, collector’s spoons, and commemorative portrait medals. His metalwork was characterized by open, delicate forms and intricate detail. In 1928, however, Petersen decided to pursue his true passion, devoting his efforts solely to sculpture. He never returned to the career of die cutting although he later designed several medallions, some which were realized.
A more intimate example of Petersen’s metalwork is a brooch he made for his wife, Charlotte. This silver brooch features a design of a nude male and female holding hands across a flower. It was specifically crafted to complement a particular dress of Charlotte’s, exemplifying Petersen’s attention to detail and his ability to imbue his creations with personal meaning.
