Label TextThe original inspiration for the exotic birds, which were entirely imaginative, was the Golden Pheasant crossed with the phoenix. This cross developed into the "fantasievogel" of Meissen which was probably copies by the British. In China, the phoenix is the most honorable of all birds and appears only during times of peace and prosperity. Like the phoenix, the pheasant is an emblem of beauty and good fortune. The pheasant was sometimes used in place of the phoenix. The scrollwork on this piece shows evidence fo the Baroque style then in vogue.
MarkingsGold anchor mark - Chelsea trademark 1756-1769. Over purple stain which darkens and crazed cracks and appears to perhaps be underglaze mark.
