Label TextThe Worcestoer Royal Porcelain Factory, known for its tablewares, was highly influenced by silver design as well as Chinese porcelain, as was common for most porcelain factories. In keeping with the trends, the form of this caudle cup and saucer was derived from contemporary silver designs, however, the ornamentation is more Japanese that Chinese. Although Japanese designs were not commonplace at Worcester, the pattern seen here was an exception. Sometimes called the Japan or Imari brocade pattern, the design has a color scheme of underglaze blue and gold that eventually became signature motifs for Worcester. Caudle cups superseded spout cups during the eighteenth century for the service of caudle, a thickened, sweet wine or ale drink. The two-handled vessels with covers were primarily. The pattern is a Worcester "Japan" pattern painted in underglaze-blue. The caudle cup was used to drink a thickened, sweet wine or ale called caudle.
