Label TextThis glass vessel is decorated using a technique called millefiori. Literally this term means "thousands of flowers" in Italian because it gives the appearance of little flowers in the glass. It was first created by the Romans who used this glass exclusively for the upper class citizens. Only later was this glass called millefiori by the Venetians who copied the style during the Renaissance. To create this style, slices of colored canes of glass are embedded in hot molten glass in certain patterns and then smoothed and cooled. Millefiori is now commonly seen in paperweights and other glass collectibles.
