Label TextTo accommodate the growing public demand for art objects of the mid-nineteenth century, glass manufacturers began to experiment with new colors, shapes and means of decoration. Much of this art glass was primarily ornamental in character; function was secondary to an object’s visual complexity or associated value.
This vase was most likely made by Joseph Locke. Its Anglo-Japanese design is derived from a thirteen-volume sketchbook by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai. Begun in 1814 and titled Hokusai Manga, the sketchbook reflected the artist’s fascination with nature. The sketches detailed components of landscapes, including changing seasons, waterfalls, waves, birds, trees, mountains, insects and fish. By 1856, Hokusai’s prints were discovered in Europe, creating a wave of Japanese-inspired designs in the decorative arts.
