Label TextOvchinnikov, the maker of this kovsh, exhibited similar pieces of lacquered silver at the All-Russian exhibiton in 1882. Critics praised Ovchinnikov for the inventive combination of red lacquer and gold floral relief. The colors combined with the exaggerated pointed brow opposite the handle are reminiscent of Chinese decoration.
Markings84 (zolotniks)=silver standard mark, Kokoshnik faces to the left; imperial warrant mark; double headed eagle and mark which signifies purveyor to the Tzar. See yellow sheet in file for illustrations
