Label TextThe Stanton Memorial Campanile has stood as an iconic feature of Iowa State University’s campus for more than 125 years, and its bells still mark daily campus life. Yet people often overlook the professor whose generosity made the landmark possible: Dr. Edgar Stanton. As the first student to receive a diploma from the Iowa Agricultural College and Model Farm, Stanton devoted fifty years of service to the institution. During that time, he earned deep respect on campus while serving as Head of the Mathematics Department beginning in 1887, Vice President of the College, and Acting President of Iowa State on four occasions—including during the turbulent years of World War I. Stanton died in 1920 during the Spanish Flu pandemic and was laid to rest in the Iowa State Cemetery. The Campanile, along with this book and a memorial to his late wife Margaret, continues to honor his legacy on the campus of Iowa State University.
Of Edgar Stanton, George Washington Carver wrote to Louis Pammel in 1922: “Stanton, Stanty, as he was affectionately called, did all within his power to enthuse, and inspire me in the science of plane geometry; but, having such poor material to work with, his efforts were not crowned with very brilliant success, which of course was not his fault. Prof. Stanton was the finest teacher of Mathematics I have ever seen. He was universally loved by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.”
