Label TextWilliam L. Gilbert was one of the foremost clockmakers of the 19th century based in Connecticut. Gilbert’s first company was founded in 1828 and continued with different partnerships until 1871 when the William L. Gilbert Clock Co. was founded. Gilbert’s clocks were inexpensive timepieces designed for the masses and followed aesthetic trends in design. Their offerings included over 300 varieties of wall and mantel clocks. William L. Gilbert died in 1890, but the company retained its name and continued operations. But by the 1960s, more than a century after its founding, Gilbert finally wound down.
The walnut case of this 1880s eight-day Prince model shelf clock is decorated with shaped moldings, applied carvings, geometrically stenciled glass, and an overall Eastlake design. The Clockmaker's paper label remains on the backboard.
