Label TextThough this brown glazed vase with incised design predates the Iowa College Pottery production date of 1920, it was created at Iowa State College in 1917 by an instructor in Ceramic Engineering. A journal article “Clay Building and Pottery Decoration” by W.G. Whitford appeared in Industrial Arts Magazine in July, August, and October of 1917 and January of 1918. In Transactions of the Ceramic Society, Volume 20 of 1921 an article by Whitford “Iowa Clays: Possibilities of Pottery Manufacture” appeared. In 1914, in Alfred, New York, The Ceramic Society met at the home of Prof. Bole and W.G. Whitford spoke about “Ceramic Art." A detailed article “Possibilities of Pottery Manufacture from Iowa Clays” by Whitford and O.J. Whittemore appeared in the Iowa State College Engineering Experiment Station Bulletin of June 23, 1920 (Vol. XIX, No. 4). An image of this vase appeared in the article.
