Label TextÉtagère Cabinet (from Cook, Clarence. "The House Beautiful." North River Press: 1980, pp95-98.)
An étagère is a set of shelves. No shelf extends entirely across the space to be shelved, nor is there any upright partition dividing the shelves themselves. The object of the irregular arrangement is to avoid monotony and it gives to articles of different sizes and shapes. It is an ornamental upholder of the ornamental. Probably Chinese or Japanese. The wood is probably white pine.
This étagère belonged to Carrie Chapman Catt.
