Label TextJay N. (Ding) Darling was one of Iowa's most widely know citizens and a cartoonisht (and conservationist) of national repute. One of his most famous cartoons was the one depicting the Iowa farmer comtemplating--with obvious satisfaction--the results of his labors.
At left is the "original original." This is the original, rather rough drawing which Ding first did and from which he drew the final cartoon that was so widely reprinted. Note the Changes in the finished product above.
John M. Henry of Des Moines, a long-time associate and friend of Ding's, was willed the engraver's proofs and other material from the cartoonist's files. This "orginial original" was in that material and because its topic was agricultural, he kindly gave it to Iowa State University.
