Label TextPrint based on a silhouette portrait cut by Brown of De Witt Clinton, U.S. Senator and Governor of New York, who was largely responsible for the construction of the Erie Canal. He is shown standing in a room adorned with a map of New York state. This print was was conceived as part of Brown's 1844 book, Portrait Gallery of DIstinguished Americans, which included biographies.
