Label TextJack Trice was Iowa State College's first African-American athlete, and was pursuing a degree in animal husbandry. Trice was fatally injured during his first major football game on October 6, 1923.
The Jack Trice memorial sculpture was commissioned by Iowa State's Government of the Student Body and given to the Art on Campus Collection in 1984. Located outside Jack Trice Stadium, the bronze sculture depicts Trice wearing a varsity letter sweater with academic texts at his feet, reading the letter written before his first and final game.
