Label TextKawase Hasui was a master of the Japanese landscape print and one of the most prolific shin hanga artists of the 20th century. The shin hanga movement, in which the artist worked with outside carvers, printers, and publishers to create a work, flourished from about 1915 to 1942. In his prints, Hasui used a broad palette to dpict virtually every mood in all the seasons, from moonlit scenes in blue and gray to warm sunlit views. A popular artist, Hasui was declared a Living National Treasure, the highest honor that can be given to a Japanese artist or craftsperson, by the Japanese government in 1956.
