Label TextElizabeth Borglum specialized in still life’s, portraits, and animal studies and in the early 1900’s she moved more towards the landscape and painted views from around Southern California.
Elizabeth Borglum was born in Racine, WI on December 21, 1848. Elizabeth did her early schooling in Boston, MA following that she studied at Miss Graham’s school in New York. At this time, she started her art training under the supervision of Charles W. Knudsen in 1875. Following her training with Knudsen she moved to San Francisco in 1881 and continued studying art with William Keith. While she was studying with Keith she met John Gutzon Borglum who was also a student. John Gutzon de la Mothe Borglum later gained fame for his creation of Mt. Rushmore National Memorial in South Dakota. Elizabeth and John got married in Los Angeles on September 10, 1889. The following decade they spent quite amount of time traveling to Europe. Once returning to California the couple bought El Rosario, a home in Sierra Madre, California. Elizabeth continued teaching and painting out of the home even after the couples divorce in 1908.
