Label TextProctor was born in West Sussex, England and studied engineering and agriculture. He established his own engraving studio in 1968. In the late 1970s he practiced his craft in Baden, Austria and at Illinois State University as an artist-in-residence. He returned to teach for a few years at Illinois State in the early 1990s. He taught up until his death in Canberra, Australia at the Australian National University's School of Art Glass Workshop. Stephen Proctor emphasizes in his work the idea of contrast and harmony. He comments, "Conflict dissipates energy whereas harmony focuses it." He creates his art concentrating on pure light to create color reflections and this is why he engraves on or sand blasts the glass he uses. This technique is achieved by jetting sand at high velocities at the glass leaving a rough mat surface. He also prismatically cuts the glass at different widths to create varied refraction and reflection effects from the surface of his sculptures. Proctor's works of art can be seen at the Corning Museum of Glass, New York; Victoria and Albert Museum, London, England; The Glasmuseum, Denmark; and the Museum of Applied Arts, Düsseldorf.
