Label TextWritten in 1644, The Tale of the Soga Brothers was inspired by an event of five centuries earlier when a pair of orphaned brothers vow to avenge the death of their father. The popular twelve-volume epic recounts their lives, and was adapted for kabuki, noh and bunraku theater, as well as being the subject of many prints. Hiroshige's thirty-one illustrations of the tale are each accompanied by brief descriptions by Ryūkatei Tanekazu (1807-1858).
