Label TextCaleb Arnold Slade (1882-1961) was Petersen’s contemporary who established a successful career as a painted of landscapes and picturesque subject. After growing up in Massachusetts (and living for a time in Attleboro, Slade studied at the Art Students League in New York (as Petersen did for a short time) and then enrolled in the Acadmie Julian in Paris. He traveled widely, often painting these foreign scenes, and settled in France. At the outbreak of World War I, however, Slade returned to Massachusetts where he enlisted in the Army and became a captain in a camouflage unit. It was probably around this time that he met Christian Petersen. Slade may have been instrumental in gaining critical notice for Petersen’s first sculptures, and this portrait may be Petersen’s homage to him. The regard between the two artists apparently endured since they exhibited together at least twice in Attleboro chapter of the American Federation of the Arts in the 1920s.
