The firm of Harper & Brothers was founded in New York City in 1817 by James and John Harper. It was originally called J. and J. Harper. In 1962 Harper & Brothers merged with the Illinois publishing firm of Row, Peterson & Co. to form Harper & Row. Harper & Row was acquired by News Corporation in 1987 and merged with William Collins in the early 1990s to form HarperCollins. See www.newscorp.com.
