Grant WoodAmerican, 1892 - 1942
Wood was born in Iowa to a Quaker family, and except for three study trips to Paris, lived in Iowa all his life. He is thought of as a pioneer in the movement toward regional art. In 1934 he became director of the Public Works of Art Project of Iowa, and Professor of Art at the University of Iowa, Iowa City. He died in 1942 at the age of 50, from liver cancer.
