Hiroshi Yoshida
Hiroshi Yoshida became one of the best-known shin hanga (new prints) artists outside Japan, particularly in America. Before turning to print making in the early 1920s, he was already a successful Western-style painter. His print work evidences the profound impact of Western painting concepts on traditional Japanese woodblock printmaking conventions. He is recognized for his attention to fine color gradations. A world traveler, he produced a number of prints of landscape and cityscape scenes from around the world that bear a particularly Japanese sensibility. His son Toshi, also a successful print maker, followed in his father's footsteps as a world traveler who turned foreign views into shin hanga prints. Toshi Yoshida produced a number of prints of Western United States landscapes.
