James & Ralph Clews rented a potworks in Cobridge, England from 1817 to 1835, at which time they became bankrupt. They produced blue-printed earthenware primarily for the American market and were potters for the Empress of Russia. James Clews went to America in 1836 and began a factory at Troy, Indiana which also failed financially. He returned to England and died there in 1856. (Mankowitz & Haggar, p55).
