The Century Company was founded in 1881, initially to publish 'The Century' magazine. In 1933 the firm merged with D. Appleton & Company to form Appleton-Century and in 1948, after a further merger with F. S. Crofts Company, became Appleton-Century-Crofts. The firm has passed into the ownership of Pearson and part into the ownership of the Academic Learning Company.
