Maria Montoya Poveka MartinezPueblo, 1887 - 1980
Maria Martinez born in 1887 died in 1980. Her black pottery was created in the 1900's after her late husband, Julian Martinez, brought home some bits of ancient black pottery excavated by the School of American Research, where he was employed. She tried to revive the lost technique of making black ware. Julian died in 1943.
