Silver Burdett Company was founded (as Silver & Co.) in the 1880s as an education publishing house. The firm was purchased in 1985-86 by Simon & Schuster. In 1998 all the Simon & Schuster educational businesses, including Silver Burdett Company, were sold to Pearson, which formed a new company called Pearson Education. The name of Silver Burdett is preserved in the Pearson imprint of Silver Burdett Ginn.
