Pegan BrookeAmerican, born 1950

Pegan Brooke creates abstract, meditative watercolors and oil paintings with repeated horizontal lines, which sometimes recall works by Robert Ryman. Her compositions are both physically and psychologically reflective, with works such as S-85 and S-84 (both 2012) featuring shiny metallic pigments that catch the light. “My intention,” writes Brooke, “is to find a way to communicate the fleeting quality of experience and the flowing nature of being.” Her paintings draw inspiration from three regions: Pont Aven, France; Ketchum, Idaho; and Bolinas, California. Brooke is the recipient of the Prix de Rome, resident at the Millay Colony, and a recipient of the Tiffany Foundation Artist Grant.
