Stephen De Staebler

Stephen De Staebler’s sculptures in ceramic and bronze pay homage to antiquity while capturing the mosaic of relationships connecting the body and earth. Complementing this emphasis on matter is a poignant engagement with spirit: his elegiac forms manifest a yearning for unity and spiritual transcendence in a fractured world. One of the preeminent members of the California Clay Movement, he is credited with sustaining the figurative tradition in the postwar era.
