Utagawa Kunisada sometimes called Toyokuni III was probably the most prolific of all Japanese print artists. Kunisada also passed his name on to a favorite pupil, Baichoro Kunisada, most often referred to today as Kunisada II. Joined the famous art school of Utagawa Tokoyuni and took the name Kunisada. In 1808 his first works were published and his fame grew fast. He had a reputation for his conceited personality. In 1844 Kunisada took the name Toyokuni after his deceased master and he became Tokoyuni III.
Names Utagawa Kunisada was known under: 1807-1844 Gototei Kunisada, 1833-1844 Kochoro Kunisada, from 1844 Toyokuni III, and from 1845 Shozo.
