Utagawa KuniyoshiJapanese, 1797 - 1861
Kuniyoshi was particularly famous for his portrayal of warrior and battle scenes. In fact, early in his career, there developed a fad among young men of Edo to have some of his more fierce-looking warriors copied as tattoos on their bodies. Kuniyoshi occasionally collaborated with Hiroshige, providing foreground figures for Hiroshige's landscape background. Given name was Yoshisaburo but took his masters name of Kuniyoshi after completing his schooling under Tokoyuni Utagawa. He died on April 14, 1861 from effects of a stroke.
