Walter Home LizarsEnglish, 1788 - 1859

Lizars was first apprenticed by his father from 1802-1805, then studied under John Graham at the Trustee's Academy in Edinburgh. In 1812, his father died and Lizars abandoned painting to support his mother and family. In 1821 he perfected a method of etching away background of a copper plate to produce a relief surface similar to that in a wood engraving. In 1826, he was a founding member of the Royal Scottish Academy and was elected an honorary member in 1834. He died on March 30, 1859 in Jedburgh.
