Barnes studied pre-law at U.C.L.A., 1976-78 and art history from 1981-84 at University of Iowa. He has been affiliated with the Mural Project, Downtown, Des Moines, Iowa in 1987, Freelance Work, Country Home Magazine, Meredith Publishing, Des Moines, Iowa. Guest Lecturer, Japanese prints, Simpson College, Indianola, Iowa 1984. Barnes passed away in April 21, 2023 due to cancer.
