Gil HarrisonAmerican, 1944 - 2013

Gil Harrison passed away in January (2013) due to natural causes at his home, studio and showroom tucked into the woods outside Cottage Grove, Oregon. He originally took classes at the Maude Kern Art Center but considered himself self-taught. He called his work “ethnic future,” after it was chosen by a Star Trek Voyager set designer who featured it in several episodes of the show. He was a potter at the very first Oregon Country Fair and was an active organizer for the fair for a few years. He loved music; he loved to dance. He was a DJ on KLCC and founded the first marimba band in the Eugene area called Shumba that was a regular fixture of the OCF. He was most proud of the 2000 retrospective at the Maude Kerns Arts Center in Eugene that celebrated his life and honored his 30 years as a potter. Gil’s signature style both in clay and in life will be sorely missed.
