Marc Moulton

Artist Info
Marc Moulton(American, b. 1960)

Marc Moulton enjoys the versatility of metal. He incorporates glass, neon light, and stone into his wall pieces and large outdoor sculpture. He is interested in creating pieces that interact with one another and share a relationship by virtue of their form. Marc's work is always in response to each particular location and institution. He successfully creates sculptures that have strong visual and conceptual connections to their surrounding environment. Several of his interior works are based on neon light, which he uses as if it were vibrant, colorful paint. He fabricates his exterior works of weatherproof materials such as stainless steel or aluminum.

At the heart of teaching art is the teaching of a visual language. It is paramount that students learn and understand how design, textures, colors, and form, communicate. That is, how do objects/images, outside of sentimental association, tell us something, or communicate. Most beginning students understand that a rose can signify love and that a thorny rose can mean a broken, painful love. What students often fail to understand is the limited, kitschy nature of this kind of popular, expressive solution. It is the teacher's job to help students expand and build upon what may be a limited understanding of how we can communicate through art.

Having spent his youth in the mountains of Utah, he is influenced by the landscape around him. Marc's public art works can be seen throughout Iowa. The collections of Iowa State University and Kirkwood Community College include his work. The Principal Financial Group, the Iowa Civil Rights Commission, and Mercy Medical Center, all in Des Moines, have Marc's sculptures in their public art collections. In Waterloo, Marc's Dove can be seen at the Covenant Medical Center.

Marc is the studio technician at the University of Northern Iowa. He is listed in the Iowa Arts Council's Public Art Artists Roster. He received his MFA from Ohio State University.
