Luis Jiménez

Jiménez earned his B.S. degree at the University of Texas in 1964. His father, a sign painter and neon maker taught him commercial techniques and received a first-hand experience with the special vocabulary of popular imagery. He studied architecture and moved to New York where he had his first solo exhibition in 1969. Jiménez worked with Latino youth, produced figurative fiberglass sculptures that reflect his influences from social realism, Pop Art and New Figuration. He worked in his home and studio, a converted schoolhouse in Hondo, New Mexico which he shared with wife Susan and their three children. He held a professorship in the Department of Art at the University of Texas at Austin. Jimenez passed away in a studio accident in June of 2006.
