The publishing firm of A. S. Barnes & Co. was founded in Hartford, Connecticut in 1838 by Alfred S. Barnes. Barnes had various partners in the early years and the firm briefly used names including Alfred S. Barnes and Charles Davies and A. S. Barnes & Burr, before reverting to A. S. Barnes & Co. In 1958 A. S. Barnes & Co. merged with Thomas Yoseloff, Inc. "Yoseloff and his son Julien remained in control of the firm until 1978, when it was acquired by Leisure Dynamics, Incorporated of San Diego, California" (quoted from 'Dictionary of Literary Biography' 46 (1986), p. 390). Soon after the acquisition of the firm by Leisure Dynamics, the names of Thomas Yoseloff and A. S. Barnes disappeared as imprints.
