Alexander Kachinsky

Painter, printmaker, and designer Alexander Kachinksy was born in Kharkiv, Russia, in 1888. He studied at the Russian Academy of Arts, known at the time as the Leningrad Institute for Painting (following the Russian Revolution). Upon graduation he traveled to France to study at the Academy Benson under Maurice Denis in Paris.

Kachinsky relocated to the United States in the late 1920s to pursue a career in design. He began exhibiting his furniture designs in 1930, starting with the 12th Annual Home Show exhibition at the Grand Central Palace in New York, which featured works by the members of the American Union of Decorative Arts and Craftsman (AUDAC). He also designed sets for theater and dance, including Diaghilev's Russian Ballet in France and Spain.

He taught at the Westchester Workshop in White Plains, NY and the Huguenot YMCA in New Rochelle, NY.
