Hans Holbein the YoungerBavarian, 1497 - 1543

Born in Augsburg, Bavaria, Hans received his first art lessons from his father. Holbein went to Basel, Switzerland with his brother and began illustrating books, such as Martin Luther's translation of the Bible. In 1526, Holbein moved to London due to financial strife in Basel but returned there in 1528 where he painted murals and portraits. In England he became the court painter to Henry VIII and his services were much in demand, with more than 100 portraits completed. In 1543 Holbein died in London as a victim from the plague.
