Daniel Appleton founded his firm as an importer of books around 1813 and published his first book in Boston in 1831. In 1933 the firm merged with The Century Company to form Appleton-Century and in 1948, after a further merger with F. S. Crofts Company, became Appleton-Century-Crofts. Part of the firm has passed into the ownership of Pearson Education and part into the ownership of the Academic Learning Company.
