Label TextThe distinctive wig in this print suggests that the actor is playing Ishikawa Goemon, a favorite character of the kabuki stage. The tale of Goemon starts in the mid-1600s biography that mentions him as a theif; over the next centuries, he is transformed into an folk hero who steals from the rich, gives to the poor, and dies trying to spare his young son.
