Label TextSchares (’05 electrical engineering) a La Porte City native, departed Iowa degree in hand, for adventures in the western United States and a career as an engineer. In the back of his mind, Schares knew he’d be back. While simultaneously working full time as a senior NAND array reliability engineer at Intel, in Portland, Ore., Schares completed his Master of Library and Information Science degree from Rutgers University (2012). He gathered additional experience in engineering and in librarianship that would serve him well upon his return to higher education: information literacy, open access, and the challenges of intellectual freedom. After nine years in Oregon, in 2015, the perfect opportunity presented itself and Schares returned to Iowa when he accepted a position as the engineering and physical sciences librarian at Iowa State. Schares brought a spirit of collegiality with him to the library, which extends campus wide through outreach to engineering faculty and students in his subject areas.
