Label TextA colorful addition:
Like icing on a cake, art was installed last month on the west exterior of the Hub as the final element of the historic building's 2018 renovation. The colorful two-part steel sculpture, "Coalesce," was created by Iowa City artist and University of Iowa professor Susan Chrysler White.
The sculpture is among the final works of art to be installed as part of the Art in State Buildings program which designates 0.5 percent of new construction and remodeling funds for public art. That program was repealed by the Legislature in 2017, but planned projects -- including ISU Dining's extensive remodel of the Hub venue -- were grandfathered in. ISU has made a commitment to continue this percent-for-art program for future construction projects.
University Museums now has six of Chrysler White's works of art in its Art on Campus collection. The other five are:
• "Both Sides Now," 2017 mural, Windows dining center, Friley Hall
• "Exquisite Garden," 2012 painting, Office of the Vice President for Research, Beardshear Hall
• "Our House is a Very, Very, Very Fine House," 2017 mural, Windows dining center, Friley Hall
• "Rain Dance," 2012 painting, Office of the Vice President for Research, Beardshear Hall
• "Zoopsia," 2013 sculpture, west entrance, Morrill Hall
