Label TextIn 1720, at the age of twenty-three, Johann Gregor Höroldt was working at the DuPaquier factory in Vienna when he was enlisted by runaway Meissen artist Samuel Stölzel. Stölzel had been lucky to escape Saxony without punishment since he had taken with him some of the guarded production secrets that made Meissen the exclusive European porcelain manufacturer. Stölzel had also played a part in establishing DuPaquier, Meissen’s major competition. However, Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, had an insatiable appetite for porcelain and having inspected the work of Stölzel’s protege Höroldt, the Elector reinstated Stölzel and appointed Höroldt to take charge of the decorating atelier at Meissen.
Höroldt introduced Meissen to a much more colorful palette. He is best known for his distinctive chinoiserie designs, as seen here, where the human form is of main interest and the landscape is secondary. The scenes follow European stylistic composition with proportional figures and balanced perspective. Detail is greatly emphasized, as if painting in miniature, which is fitting for Höroldt since he was trained as a miniature painter and enameler.
