Label TextThe Gustav Klingert firm of 55 employees opened in 1865 and remained in business until the Russian Revolution. The firm was awarded bronze medals at the Paris World Exposition in 1889 and at the Chicago Columbian Exposition in 1893. Though some scholars consider Klingert a less significant enameler, he was named as one of the most important enamelers at the Chicago Exposition. This teapot by Klingert is predominantly blue enamel interlacing scrollwork on a gilt stippled ground. Typical of his style, Klingert incorporated bands of turquoise blue beads to accentuate and define borders. Here one is reminded of Persian enamelers’ use of turquoise and gold. The scrollwork is again reminiscent of seventeenth century and possibly ancient book illustrations.
